The Austrian Pine forms a dense pyramid when young but develops a picturesque spreading crown with age. The needles are dark green, very stiff, 5-6" long, and are borne in bundles of two. The bark on older trees is quite striking, having light gray ridges with dark brownish/black furrows. Adapts to urban conditions better than most pines. It ranges in height from 40 to 60 ft and it gets to about 25-40 feet in width. It's cold hardy to zone 3. It prefers moist, well drained soils but tolerates a wide range of soils. Adaptable to a wide range of conditions. Full sun is prefered. Fairly salt tolerant.
Recommended Planting Instructions:
Scarification: Soak in water for 48 hours, change water each day. Stratification: None Required. Germination: Sow seed 1/8" deep, press seed into soil, cover seed, and keep moist.
