The Black Mulberry is a rapidly growing tree from the Moraceae (Mulberry) family. The berry-like fruit of the Black Mulberry is considered the best tasting of the Mulberry species. It has a very tart, sweet taste. The Black Mulbery is a medium sized tree usually only reaching 20-30 ft, but has been know to reach up to 70ft tall. Trees are fairly adaptable, but grow well in deep, moist soils. Fertilization is generally unneccessary. They prefer full sun. Although they appear so, fruits are not berries, but an aggregate. Trees are known to live ver long and can bear fruite for several hundred years. Mildly drought tolerant, does like water during long dry spells. Its uses are for fresh fruit, jelly, and jams. It's cold hardy to zone 4.
Recommended Planting Instructions:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand 24 hours, repeat process for 4 days. Stratification: Cold stratify
for 90 days. Germination: Surface sow, tamp soil, mulch seed bed, keep moist. Can be sown outdoors in fall for spring germination. Unstratified seeds sown in the spring with start to germinate the following spring.
