Product Description

Approximately 1000 Seeds available as of Jan. 14, 2012.

The European Alder is a large shrub or small to medium sized tree. They grow naturally in bogs or along stream banks where the soil is often quite wet. It has a narrow pyramidal crown and grows rapidly and often develops an irregular form. It can be somewhat short lived, especially if grown in dry, stressful soils. Foliage is clean, glossy dark green. The fruiting structure is about 1/2 inch long and resembles a small, dark brown pin cone. Prefers moist, cool soil but can tolerate drier soils. Like full sun to partial shade. Its a good choice for difficult wet soils. Reaches a height of 50 ft and a width of 30 ft. Hardy to zone 3.

Recommended Planting Instructions:

Scarification: Soak in water for 48 hours, change water each day. Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days. Germination: Sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp soil, mulch seed bed. Fall sowing in mulched seedbeds is preferred to artificial stratification.
