The Golden rain tree is a fast-growing, deciduous tree reaching about 30' in height. At maturity, it has a rounded crown. The leaves turn yellow in the fall. Its bark is light gray-brown. The Golden rain tree is produces large clusters of showy yellow flowers in the fall. These are followed by 2" red-purple seed pods. The fruit is a papery three-compartment, bladder-like structure full of seeds. In warm climates seed is produced in great quantities and there are always seedlings beneath a mother tree. The tree is invasive under these conditions. The Golden Rain Tree is native to eastern Asia. The Golden rain tree is quite adaptable to most soil conditions. It does best in loose, well drained soil with good watering, especially when young. It tolerates drought, alkaline soil, heat, wind, and air pollution. The Golden Rain Tree is cold hardy to USDA zone 5.
Recommended Planting Instructions:
Scarification: Soak in hot water for 48 hours, change water each day. Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days. Germination: Sow seed 1/2" deep, tamp soil, mulch seed bed and cover seedbed with shade. Other: Sporadic germination may occur over a 2-3 year period.
