The Ponderosa Pine is a native throughout western North America. It is one of the major timber tree species. In the landscape, Ponderosa Pine has a broad pyramidal form when young, developing a rounded crown with age. Needles are dark green, very long and borne in bundles of three or sometimes two. It is used limitedly in landscape. It prefers a moist, well-drained loam soil, though it is found growing in many different soil types. Fairly tolerant of drought and alkaline soils. Prefers full sun. The Ponderosa Pine can reach between 40-70 ft tall. It's hardy to zone 3.
Recommended Planting instructions:
Scarification: Soak in water for 48 hours. Stratification: Cold stratify for 60 days. Germination: Sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp soil, and mulch seed bed. Other: Fall sowing in mulched seedbeds is preferred
to artificial stratification.
Other: Can also soak in water for 48 hours, change water each day, then plant.
