The Red Maple is an excellent landscape tree in situations where it is adapted. It has an oval to round crown, smooth gray bark as a young tree, and red flowers in very early spring. The lobed leaves are a nice bright green and develop beautiful fall colors ranging from clear yellow to orange to a vivid red. The Red Maple is native from central Minnesota to the east coast and south to Florida The Red Maple can reach 40-70 feet in height and has a width of 30-50 feet. It's cold hardy to zone 3. The Red Maple prefers full sun. It tolerates a wide range of soil types. Prefers deep, moist soil but will grow in poor soil.
Recommended Planting Instructions:
Scarification: Soak in water for 24 hours. Stratification: Cold stratify for 30 days.
Germination: Sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp soil, and mulch seed bed. Other: Fall sowing in mulched seedbed is prefered to artificial stratification
