The Red Spruce is a medium sized tree that is more rounded as opposed to steeple shaped. The needles appear to have a reddish tint from a distance. The needles do not project at near 90 degree angles but follow the twig more closely The needles are about 1/2" long, attached to a sometimes hairy twig. The Red Spruce cones are small and squat and grow in great numbers towards the top of trees. It ranges in height from 40 to 60 ft. It's cold hardy to zone 3. It prefers moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates many soil types. It also preferes full sun.
Recommended Planting Instructions:
Scarification: Soak in water for 48 hours, change water each day. Stratification: None Required. Germination: Sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp soil, and mulch seed bed.
