The Silk Tree is a species of legume. It is also known as the Persian Silk Tree, Pink Siris, Bastard Tamarind, or Nemu Tree. Its leaves slowly close during the night and during periods of rain, the leaflets downward as if the Silk Tree were sleeping. Its modern Persian name, Shabkhosb, means " the night sleeper". In Japan it is all called Nemunoki, Nenenoki, and Nemurinoki which all mean "sleeping tree". The Silk Tree is a small deciduous tree with a broad crown of level arching branches. The bark is dark greenish gray in color and striped vertically as it gets older. It has delicate doubly compound dark green leaves. The Silk Tree is widely planted as a ornamental plant, grown for the leaf texture and flowers. The broad crown of a mature tree makes it useful for providing dappled shade. In the wild, the tree grows in dry plains, sandy valleys, and uplands. The flower color varies from white to rich red-tipped flowers. Cream or pale yellow variants have also been reports. The bark has been known to be used for curing bruises and as a vermicide. The seeds are used for food for livestock and wildlife. The flowers are sweetly scented and are a good source of nectar for honeybees. The Silk Tree's flowers are like puffs and very showy. It can reach heights of up to 40 feet. It's cold hardy to zone 4.
